Flax is deemed to be the earliest cultivated fiber plant dating back to 30,000 B.C. Its' seed (linseed) is medicinally useful as well as providing the commonly used linseed oil as a solvent for oil-based paints. Crushed seeds are helpful in the treatment of boils and other inflammations. Seeds contain high amounts of dietary fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, as well as numerous micro-nutrients. Solitary stems carry alternate narrow leaves about 1 inch long and are topped by turquoise blue flowers. Best planted in masses so that the stems can provide support for each other. National flower of Belarus.
